A crocodile has become pregnant all by herself, becoming the first known case of a “Virgin birth” among crocodiles.
At a zoo in Costa Rica, a reptile created a fetus that shared 99.9% of its own genetic makeup, resembling herself.
This remarkable occurrence happened despite having been separated from other crocodiles throughout her entire life.
Previously, scientists have observed instances of “Virgin birth” in birds, fish, and other reptiles, but such an occurrence had never been documented in crocodiles until now.
According to scientists, this characteristic could have been passed down from a previous ancestor in evolution, which may include dinosaurs.
