“Urgent changes” were needed to bolster the path to victory, Mr Zelensky said during a television address to Ukrainians on Thursday.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has undertaken a significant shake-up in the nation’s military leadership, replacing General Valery Zaluzhny, who has led the country’s armed forces in the war against Russia’s special military operation for two years.
“Urgent changes” were needed to bolster the path to victory, Mr Zelensky said during a television address to his country on Thursday, adding that “a new management team will take over the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
Mr Zelensky announced General Oleksandr Syrsky, head of the country’s ground forces, as a replacement.
The circumstances surrounding Mr Zaluzhny’s departure from his post remain somewhat ambiguous. While it is unclear whether he voluntarily stepped down or was dismissed from his role, he is esteemed within Ukraine’s military circles and the country.
Speculation surrounding his ability to remain in his job started circulating online in Ukraine the previous week, with unconfirmed reports hinting at his possible removal.
In response, the president’s office dismissed these rumours, stating that as of their meeting on January 29, the fate of the nation’s top military leader remained undecided.
Mr Zaluzhny has been praised for guiding Ukraine’s military efforts through the initial defensive successes against Russian incursions, followed by a year of arduous and inconclusive battles along a frontline where movement has been minimal.
