The lawmaker based his decision on the intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored his election into the Senate.
Labour Party senator, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has defected to the All Progressives Congress and declared support for President Bola Tinubu.
The federal lawmaker, representing Imo East Senatorial District, confirmed his defection to the ruling party, in a letter read out by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Tuesday.
Mr Onyewuchi, in the statement said that after due consultation with his family and constituents, he “formally notify you and my distinguished colleagues of my resignation as member of the Labour Party, and my formal declaration for the All Progressives Congress.”
The lawmaker based his decision to join the ruling party on the, “intractable division and crisis in the Labour Party that sponsored my election into the Nigerian Senate.”
He also stated that Imo State and the entire the South-East remain united under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma, “to give our unflinching support to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and of course, support his administration, aimed at achieving sustainable development for our country.”
He noted that his decision to defect was in compliance with the provisions of the 1999 constitution (as amended).
Mr Uzodimma, who is the Chairman of APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, along with his team, were earlier during plenary, admitted into the hallowed chamber in line with Senate rules, in order to witness Mr Onyewuchi’s defection.
He was also welcomed by APC lawmakers, and ushered to take his seat at the APC wing of the Senate Chambers.
Mr Onyewuchi’s defection now brings to three, the number of APC senators from the South-Eastern state.
Mr Onyewuchi, a former member of the House of Representatives, representing Owerri-Municipal/Owerri-North/West-Federal Constituency, in 2022, also dumped the Peoples Democratic Party to join the Labour Party.
