Ghanaian football legend, Asamoah Gyan, 37, on Tuesday, announced his official retirement from football.
The former striker made the announcement via his verified Twitter handle, @ASAMOAH_GYAN3.
He tweeted, “I want to take this great opportunity, a stage that is difficult in every footballer’s career, a moment all footballers do not wish, but when nature dawns, that thin voice will keep echoing into the ears.”
“It is time… that voice has been clear in my ears, and I have succumbed to it, it is time. It is time to hang up the jersey and boots in glory as I officially retire from active football,” the statement read.
Gyan, nicknamed ‘Baby Jet,’ was a key member of the Ghana National team. He registered 51 goals in 109 appearances, thus becoming the highest goal scorer for his country.
He played for several football clubs including Liberty, Udinese, Modena FC, Stade Rennais, Sunderland, amongst others.
Gyan featured in the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, and seven African Cup of Nations tournaments for the National team.
In 2010, he famously lost the chance to convert a penalty kick which will make Ghana become the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals, which was bettered by Morocco in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
His left-footed shot hit the woodwork after a goal-bound handball by Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez.
Gyan enjoyed a stellar football career that spanned for two decades. He appreciated those who had made contributions to his football career.
The tweet stated, “I want to thank my beloved country Ghana, my family, my colleagues from school, those from colts and Blackstar from 2002 to date, club mates, coaches and everybody who has played a role in my career as a footballer, I say thank you.”
The record goal scorer said he’ll use his experience in the areas of football business, coaching and scouting.
