The FOC said that innovations and human capacity development were crucial to the Nigerian Navy.
The Naval Institute of Technology has graduated 88 students in various engineering disciplines.
The maiden convocation and combined graduation of the institute was held on Friday in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta.
Speaking during the occasion, the Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Training Command, Rear Admiral Istifanus Albara, lauded the efforts of the institute in the development of skilled technologists.
Mr Albara was represented by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Naval Engineering Services Limited, Rear Adm. Baratuaipri Iyalla.
The FOC said that innovations and human capacity development were crucial to the Nigerian Navy and urged the institute to keep it up.
He said, “This event is a testament to the navy’s resolve to be a technologically advanced force. The graduates will not only manned but also manage advanced platforms and systems crucial to maritime operations.’’
Mr Albara expressed gratitude to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, the National Board for Technical Education and industry partners in enhancing the progress of the NIT.
Also speaking, Commandant of the NIT, Rear Adm. Sunday Oyegade, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to maintaining global standards.
According to him, the NBTE accreditation ensures the institute’s curriculum is robust, blending theoretical knowledge with practical expertise and equipping the graduates to thrive within the navy and beyond.
Mr Oyegade said that plans were underway to upgrade the institution to a full-fledged polytechnic that would also accommodate civilians.
He stated, “This marks the beginning of new opportunities. Let your contributions reflect the high standards of this institution.’’
Eighty-eight students were awarded diplomas in Marine Engineering, Weapon Electrical Engineering and Automobile Engineering.
In his keynote address, Retired Commodore Uba Ajala highlighted the critical roles of artificial intelligence and innovation in maritime security.
He encouraged graduands to remain adaptive and forward-thinking.
Mr Ajala spoke on the topic, “Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Contemporary Nigerian Navy Operations: The Role of Naval Engineering.’’
He lauded the effort of the CNS in advancing the Navy’s technological capacity and emphasised the need for cutting-edge systems such as drones, aircraft, and maritime domain awareness platforms.
“Innovation and human capacity development are crucial for securing Nigeria’s critical oil and gas assets,” Mr Ajala noted.
In attendance were the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, Maj- Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (retd) represented by Col. Moses Babuba (retd) and representatives of the NBTE among others.
