The Borno government is targeting 447,126 girls for vaccination against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
The Commissioner for Health, Baba Malam-Gana, said this at the inauguration of the vaccination exercise on Tuesday in Maiduguri.
HPV is the most common Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI); it causes an infection, typically through sexual contact. Warts are a common symptom.
It can also increase the risk of some types of cancer. Vaccines can help prevent HPV infections.
Mr Gana said the immunisation exercise targeted girls between the age of nine and 14 to protect them against contracting the virus.
He said the exercise was being implemented in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), adding that it is a pivotal step towards safeguarding girls’ health to secure a brighter and healthier future.
“By vaccinating our girls against HPV, we are not only protecting them from this deadly disease but also empowering them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
“I assure you that the vaccine is safe, effective, and has been thoroughly tested and approved by health authorities worldwide,” the commissioner said.

“Cervical cancer fuelled by persistent infection with certain strains of HPV has long been a silent and formidable adversary, claiming the lives of far too many women each year.
“Yet, amidst the challenges, we find hope in the power of prevention through vaccination. Introduction of HPV vaccine represents a proactive and strategic approach towards preventing cervical cancer,” he said.
Mr Audu, represented by Aisha Kadai, stressed the need for effective sensitisation to create awareness of the dangers and preventive tips of the disease.
He also tasked health workers to the imperative of public enlightenment to mobilise participation in the exercise.
