One Year Not Enough To Judge Tinubu’s Performance: Bishop Kukah

“Nigerians are in various levels of pain and they are pains that are unintended.’’

Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto and Founder of The Kukah Centre, Matthew Kukah, has said it is premature to assess President Bola Tinubu’s performance in only one year in office.

The bishop spoke at the Presidential Villa in response to journalists asking him to rate Mr Tinubu’s performance whose administration will clock one year in office on May 29.

The cleric visited the President at the Villa to discuss an event organised by the Kukah Centre

“I’m sure that many people will tell you that one year is not enough to make a judgment,” Mr Kukah told the reporters at the State House on Wednesday. “However, from where we all stand, we know that we are all in a difficult situation.”

The clergyman however noted that there was economic hardship in the land which he described as an “unintended” consequence of policies which “with time” would be modified to favour the average citizen.

“Nigerians are in various levels of pain and they are pains that are unintended. But, they are as a result of certain policy decisions that hopefully, with time, can be amended in order to serve the welfare of ordinary people. We just need to commit ourselves to the fact that building a good society takes a lot of time. It’s not something that is done in one lifetime,” Mr Kukah said. .

He added that the presidency should do well in communicating a timeframe when the nation’s economic hardship would end.

The cleric stated, “My argument has always been that the government needs to very quickly improve the quality of communication so that Nigerians can at least get a sense of how long is it going to be before food is ready.”
